GOVERNOR DUCEY PROCLAMS MAY 20th, 2017 AS                            “NATIONAL ARMED FORCES FREEDOMRIDE” IN ARIZONA

PHOENIX – A Proclamation has been issued by the Office of the Governor, designating May 20th, 2017 as "National Armed Force FreedomRide" in Arizona. The declaration recognizes the significance of Armed Forces Day and the “National Armed Forces FreedomRide”

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. On May 20, 1950 the first official Armed Forces Day was celebrated and has been since then on the third Saturday every year.  This year will mark the first day that the NAFFR falls on the same day it was proclaimed back on May 20, 1950.

The event took place at the American Legion Post 2 at 8:00 am 2125 S Industrial Park Ave, Tempe

The ceremonies will opened at 8:30am with the presentation of the colors by the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps – Phoenix Division, followed by the National Anthem performed by Annette "Red' Baker.

A proclamation from the governor’s office was read and presented by Dave Hampton, AZ Department of Veterans Services on behalf of Governor Doug Ducey.

6th National Armed Forces FreedomRide USA 2015

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.

The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

This year May 20, 2017 marks the 67th anniversary of Armed Forces Day, This will be the FIRST time the FreedomRide falls on the same day it was proclaimed a National Holiday...In a speech announcing the formation of the day, President Truman "praised the work of the military services at home and across the seas" and said, "it is vital to the security of the nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace."                                                                                  In an excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, Mr. Truman stated: Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America's defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense
